1. Mycenaean -Mycenae, is an archaeological site in Greece, located about 90 km south-west of Athens.
2. Trojan War - A great war fought between Greece and Troy; the Greeks sailed to Troy to recover Helen of Troy, the beautiful wife of Menelaus.
3. Homer- An ancient Hebrew measure of capacity, equal to ten ephahs or ten baths, and approximately equal to ten or eleven bushels.
4. Polis - Greek term for the city-state, such as Athens or Sparta.
5. Helot - conquered indigenous population of Sparta; provided agricultural labor for Spartan landowners; only semi-free
6. Phalanx- A body of troops in close array.

8. Peloponnesian War -The war which Athens and its allies were defeated by the league centered on Sparta; 431-404 BC.
9. Socrates - was a Classical Greek philosopher. Credited as one of the founders of Western philosophy, he is an enigmatic figure known only through the classical accounts of his students.
10. Pato-was a Classical Greek philosopher, mathematician, writer of philosophical dialogues, and founder of the Academy in Athens, the first institution of higher learning in the Western world.
11. Aristotle- Greek philosopher who taught that knowledge of God is the primary form of knowledge, and the way to know God is through the intellect and rationality
12. Alexander the Great- Born in 356 BC, he was a famous Greek conqueror.
13.Republic -The Republic is a Socratic dialogue by Plato, written in approximately 380 BC. It is one of the most influential works of philosophy and political theory, and Plato's best known work.
14. Patrician -originally referred to a group of elite citizens in ancient Rome, including both their natural and adopted members.
15.Plebeian -The Plebs was the general body of Roman citizens (as distinguished from slaves) in Ancient Rome.
16.Punic Wars-Fought between Rome and Carthage to establish dominance in the western Mediterranean.
17.Hannibal -Carthaginian general during the 2nd Punic War; invaded Italy but failed to conquer Rome.
18. Julius Caesar- conqueror of Gaul and master of Italy (100-44 BC) .
19. Triumvirate -a rule by three men. There were two separate triumvirates: 1) Caesar, Pompey, and Crassus.
20. Augustus -Roman statesman who established the Roman Empire and became emperor in 27 BC; defeated Mark Antony and Cleopatra in 31 BC at Actium (63 BC - AD 14) .
21. Jesus -a teacher and prophet born in Bethlehem and active in Nazareth; his life and sermons form the basis for Christianity (circa 4 BC - AD 29) .
22. Constantine -Emperor of Rome who stopped the persecution of Christians and in 324 made Christianity the official religion of the Roman Empire; in 330 he moved .
23. Constantinople - Name of present-day Istanbul from AD 330 to AD 1930. Previously known as Byzantium.
24. Attila - king of the Huns; the most successful barbarian invader of the Roman Empire (406-453) .
25. Justinian- Byzantine emperor who held the eastern frontier of his empire against the Persians.
26. Hagia Sophia -a 6th century masterpiece of Byzantine architecture in Istanbul.
27. Gengis Khan- Mongolian emperor whose empire stretched from the Black Sea to the Pacific Ocean (1162-1227) .
28. Kublai Khan-Mongolian emperor of China and grandson of Genghis Khan who completed his grandfather's conquest of China.
