Middle Ages Part 2 Review

1. Knights were paid by nobles to protect thier land and serfs. They rode on horseback with leather saddles. The saddles allowed them to not fall off with heavy weapons. They were rewarded with land for thier service.

2. Chivalry was made of ideals fighting for three master: There heavenly lord, their earthly lord, and chosen lady. Protect the week and poor and display loyalty, bravery and courage.

3. Literature around Chivalry idealized castle life, glorified knighthood and told stories of knights and his lady

4. Women's role in feudalism were powerless and inferior but did play an important role in families. Peasant women took care of the home. Noble women could inherit estates and send knights off to war.

5. Church Authority was centered around the Pope. The church looked to influence both spiritual and political matters. They did this by crowning Charlemagne.

6. Conflict came from the church being unhappy about the kings control over clergy and the power of lay investiture. Popes could appoint bishops but the king could veto.
